During 2008 nearly 400 teenagers were killed in car accidents on London's roads, a disproportionately high number.
Time and again, road safety groups have tried to address this over-representation of youth, both in London and nationwide, by the introduction of safety information drives, tougher penalties for driving offences and stricter driving tests.
However, one of the most effective methods remains the celebrity spearhead approach. During 2009 London's road safety fraternity again sought to reach the malleable minds of youth by using prominent public figures to send out the anti car accident message.
Gone are the days when Hollywood glitterati were the idols of choice for most young Londoners; these days, those with the most influence tend to come from the sporting world, most notably football. So it was a welcome sight to see star Premier League players from capital clubs such as Chelsea, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur fronting Transport for London's 2009 road safety campaign.
Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor of London's Director of Transport Policy, believes the drive can make a real difference. "Young footballers are idolised by thousands of teenagers and it is fantastic that they are taking part in this important campaign," he said.
Adding, "Their involvement is a great way of ensuring more young people will take the time to consider how they can use roads more safely and will help to save lives."
While Chris Lines, head of the TfL road safety unit, says, "This campaign is designed to get teenagers talking about road safety in schools.
"This year TfL is spending £57m on further safety measures on the Capital's roads."
The campaign is being launched under the strapline "Look out for your mates". Chelsea FC's head of Corporate Social Responsibility comments, "Looking after your mates is key to being a successful team on and off the pitch."
