If a car crash occurs in a difficult-to-reach area, such as on a mountain or along a rural coastline, it is possible that the ambulance that attends may be an air ambulance.
Although they are highly valued, many of these services are not funded by the NHS. The Great North Air Ambulance service is a registered charity, as is the Thames and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust, which is currently fund-raising for a second helicopter.
While their primary aims are to reach people who have received a serious personal injury - penetrating trauma or major burns, for example - where road ambulances cannot easily reach them, this is not as infrequent as it may seem. Air Ambulance Yorkshire claims that its services are called out to a car crash every working day, and the Great North Air Ambulance claims up to 5 call-outs a day.
An air ambulance, however, can be prevented from flying by poor weather and low visibility - sadly, these are conditions that can increase the chances of a car crash. Like any helicopter, there is also a risk of further injury at the scene if anyone comes into contact with rotating blades, but the pilot will normally ensure everyone present is aware of this danger.
