Sat-nav savvy can prevent an accident on a country road

During the holiday season many holiday makers fire up their satellite navigation systems and head off to the wilds of Scotland or the valleys of Wales to enjoy the rugged rural scenery in the name of vacation. However, unfamiliarity can make for tricky driving and the likelihood of suffering an accident on a country road becomes a greatly increased risk.

Pre sat-nav drivers used to get out their road maps to plan a suitable route and more often than not chose the best roads for the job. Motorways, A-roads and B-roads are statistically the safest types of road and the likelihood of suffering a car accident on these highways is reduced.

Modern route planning equipment allows the driver to merely enter a postcode into the GPS system and the navigation system will then guide the driver to their chosen destination. Most sat-navs have the facility to calculate either the fastest or the shortest mileage route, but few allow the user to ask for the safest route.

Consequently, in isolated, rural areas a sat-nav system is likely to guide the driver down narrow, twisty tracks mainly used by farm vehicles and locals, and this not only runs the risk of creating a car accident on a country road, but increases holiday stress levels to almost breaking point.

Many holiday makers take their urban, citycars – with their small, power-shy eco-friendly engines – and find they struggle up the steep hills of the Brecons. Whilst coming at them at great speed will be a local farmer in his Land Rover with all the power, stability and 4x4 capabilities which enable him to drive apace around familiar country lanes. This scenario is a sure-fire recipe for a car accident; as are the times when an impatient local, caught behind a tourist, tries a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre.

Yes, sat-navs are a boon in many urban driving situations and have made the plight of the lone-driver much easier, but they have also caused hapless motorists to suffer ignominy, and sometimes personal injury, when their friendly disembodied voice says "at the end of the road turn right" and the road ahead of them turns into little more than a cliff top track.

Police and road safety organisations regularly urge caution and the use of common sense when following a sat-nav. The car accident compensation solicitors at YouClaim also recommend the use of old fashioned methods of route planning using the most appropriate A- and B- roads wherever possible in unfamiliar and rural locations.

Most sat-navs have the facility for the driver to plan an alternative route and of course, if you look down the prescribed right-hand turn and feel it is little more than a grassy track, you can always ignore your virtual navigator. At least he, or she, is not going to throw the AA atlas out of the car window and say "Well, you do the map-reading then!"
