Avoiding a telehandler accident at work

Telehandlers (sometimes called variable reach trucks) are a type of heavy machinery vehicle most commonly used in the construction, quarry and agricultural industries. In both function and appearance telehandlers are somewhere between a forklift truck and a crane and have a telescopic boom on which a bucket, muck grab, lift grab or pallet fork may be attached. Despite their considerable versatility and usefulness, there are several hazards associated with telehandlers that may lead to an accident at work.

One of the most significant of these accident at work hazards is the risk of an operator suffering serious personal injury as a result of a failure to replace a broken window in the driver's cab of a telehandler.

The windows of a telehandler exist for far more pressing reasons than to ensure that drivers are protected from wind and rain. Their primary purpose is to prevent operators from having access to the boom.

This is because, in the event a window is broken, an operator may lean out of the window, perhaps to adjust a mirror, and in the process accidentally lower the boom, resulting in crush injuries.

Between 2003 and 2010 there have been a number of such accidents, with three of these being fatal. In response, the Health and Safety Executive has issued Safety Notices to try and ensure that all relevant employers, site managers and operators are reminded of both safe practice and the health and safety obligations that are laid out in the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations.

In the event that a telehandler cab window is broken, they remind all relevant parties that the following action is required: telehandlers withbroken or missing [glass] should be removed from use until it has been replaced. Machine owners, users and operators should be warned of the dangers of operating their machines with the side screen broken or missing, and the importance of reporting such damage as soon as it occurs.

In addition, the HSE advise daily checks to ascertain the condition of variable reach trucks.
