Car accidents and advertisement shock tactics

Any regular radio listener or television viewer will be familiar with the car accident-prevention shock tactic of the emotional or graphic road safety advertisement.

The shock tactic already has a long tradition, and this despite its many detractors within psychology who claim that the ads are rarely if ever effective as the public blocks out the message in a collective and dissonant response of "these terrible things simply won't happen to us".

However, consensus among psychologists is that the ads can be effective in creating awareness of safety road use by provoking the kind of visceral response that ultimately changes behaviour.

For example, just this year Channel 4 was criticised after running a hard-hitting seatbelt safety drive during a 6pm showing of the Simpsons. The Advertising Standards Authority agreed with complainants that the advertisement was "offensive and too graphic to be shown at that time, especially because children were likely to be watching".

Another example of an anti car accident ad causing controversy also occurred recently when Somerset ran a Valentine's Day road safety campaign that included distribution of a pamphlet which featured a photograph of a mini-skirt wearing girl standing beside a car. The photograph was accompanied by a caption reading, "Last Valentine's Day my girlfriend agreed to model with my car. They looked fantastic together."

The Valentine's Day campaign was dropped after critics branded it as "demeaning to women".
