For many years it was only possible to diagnose and identify the more serious and traumatic types of brain injury and, as such, it was considered very difficult to claim brain injury compensation for those types of milder injuries, which, although less serious, can cause significant trauma and are a feature of many car crashes, work accidents and ski slope incidents.
However, all this changed in 2011 when the New England Journal of Medicine reported that scientists at Washington University School of Medicine had developed an advanced imaging technique for "mild" brain injuries previously untraceable to other forms of technology.
The study looked at the brains of 63 United States war veterans who had been evacuated from the Iraq or Afghanistan conflicts following exposure to blast injuries. By using the imaging technology, it was able to determine that 18 had suffered damage to brain white matter – in comparison, a control group of 21 people had no such damage.
Professor David Brody from the University of Washington team commented, "We call these injuries mild, but in reality they sometimes can have serious consequences."
Comments by the study's lead author indicate that the imaging technology could one day have the potential to help accident victims claim brain injury compensation. "There is still a lot more work to be done before we fully understand whether these abnormalities truly represent significant damage to the brain white matter," she said.
Adding, "And if so, how this damage affects attention, memory, emotional regulation, balance, coordination, sleep and other functions. Likewise, the relationship between mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder is especially important. Our ongoing studies will hopefully start to answer some of these questions."
