Slip trip and fall risks for refuse collectors

Every-day life has many hazards which could lead to a slip, trip and fall and some workers are likely to be more at risk of suffering such a personal injury accident than others.

One of the types of employment with the highest proportion of workplace injury involves local authority and sub-contracted workers who collect refuse from homes and businesses.

Bin men and women have one of the dirtiest jobs around and, even with today's lightweight wheelie bins, they require quite a high degree of strength and fitness to be able to manoeuvre the containers from outside people's homes to the waiting vehicle and return it.

However a person's physical ability will not necessarily prevent a slip or trip from occurring because the nature of this type of accident is that it is unexpected.

Banana skins and other food waste can fall on the ground from the bins and become a slip hazard for walking on it without realising. This could also be the case with liquids which have been inappropriately disposed of and leak onto a path.

Rubbish has to be collected regardless of the weather and slippery surfaces caused by rain, ice or snow can catch unwary workers if they are concentrating on the job in hand rather than paying sufficient attention to the surface on which they are walking.

Items dropped from recycling bins could also form a hazard for waste collectors; for example, tripping over a cardboard box which has fallen from the lorry.

Uneven paths, raised kerbs and manhole covers and drains also offer potential for tripping accidents, especially if the worker is hurrying to complete a round.

Hurrying can also lead to refuse workers putting themselves in danger of falls by climbing onto the back of the lorry to hasten the loading or catching a ride to the next part of the round rather than riding in the cab.

Although some of these circumstances could result in a personal injury which was the fault of the worker rather than the employer because of a lack of care by the victim, in most situations, the employer will also still bear some responsibility for the slip, trip or fall.

Employers have a duty to follow health and safety guidelines, to provide protective equipment and to ensure staff are trained and supervised to carry out their work with the minimum of risk to themselves and others in the workplace.
