According to figures from the British Chiropractic Association 51% the British working population suffers from some form of back pain, with many at risk of suffering further back injury at work if they do not receive the right support from their employers.
The major problems
Unfortunately, many workers fail to make the necessary ergonomic adjustments to their desks and chairs – however, this is often because employers fail to empower them to do so by providing the right training, knowledge and equipment.
Many also spend far too long in the same position or carry heavy goods about the workplace without having had suitable training in lifting heavy goods.
And, according to Tim Hutchful from the British Chiropractic Association, our reliance on computers is an increasing problem. "Whether at work or at home, computers have begun to dominate our lives," he says, "yet what we don't realise is that they in fact have the ability to damage our health.
"Back pain is becoming quite common and our working lives could be contributing to this. By taking time to adjust your chair and by taking regular breaks can help protect your spine and prevent the onslaught of back pain".
Pregnant workers
Pregnancy puts especial strain on a woman's back and employers are required to make special adjustments with this in mind. As such, they should carry out pregnancy-specific risk assessments in order to reduce the risk of pregnant workers sustaining a back injury at work.
A pregnant worker back health risk assessment should include consideration of the following things: pregnant worker posture and comfort – computer use and desk ergonomics – workstation suitability – appropriateness of manual handling tasks – and, working at height.
