The agricultural workplace accident is an issue of national concern, according to the Health and Safety Executive.
In 2009, 38 lives were lost in this type of workplace accident, with nearly 2,500 more suffering serious personal injury.
Farm workers account for less than two-percent of the UK national workforce, yet they account a disproportionate number of work-related deaths, a fact that has led to national campaigns such as "Make the Promise", which urges seasonal agriculture workers to pledge to return safely home to their families.
However, acting locally to reduce farming-related personal injuries is equally important. For example, in 2010 it emerged there were two farm-related worker deaths in Lancashire, with 47 suffering serious personal injury and a further 85 suffering RIDDOR-reportable injuries.
An HSE inspector working in the county said that he believed many more accidents go unreported. He also explained some of the challenges facing smaller farms. "The problem tends to be in smaller stock farms where people carry out their own maintenance and work with animals, which is where problems tend to occur," he said.
"There are a lot of these kind of farms in Lancashire and, despite only 1.5% of the population working in agriculture, one in every five work-related deaths in the industry occur through people getting crushed by tractors or injured by animals.
"I am currently dealing with four families of people who have been injured on farms and I can tell you these accidents can destroy lives."
A no win, no fee specialist adds his voice, "Agricultural workers are some of the hardest working and lowliest paid workers in the country. Where their safety has been compromised and they have suffered injury, employers must be held to account, both by the Health and Safety Executive and the civil legal system. And, in some, cases, where the Corporate Manslaughter Act applies, criminal prosecutions may eventuate."
