Reducing work accident transport deaths
On May 14 2008 the Managing Work Transport Risks Conference: A Matter of Life and Death will get under way in Birmingham. The Conference will form part of the wider work accident prevention measures at the heart of Safety and Health Expo. All events will be held at the Concourse Suite at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
The event could not come at a more appropriate time, with 66 people having died in transport-related work accidents in the year 2006/2007. It is believed that 52 of these fatal work injuries were suffered by workers, while the remaining 14 fatalities were members of the public.
Yet, in reality, the situation could conceivably have been far worse, as 1,677 people sustained serious workplace transport injuries, with a further 4,233 incurring reportable injuries.
The figurehead speaker at the events will be the Health and Safety Executive's chief executive for skills and logistics, while the organisation's programme manager for workplace transport will speak on the most common transport-related accidents in the workplace, which include, falling from vehicles, being hit by vehicles, vehicles falling over, and people falling from vehicles.
The occupational safety advisor at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, who will play a key role at the conference, commented, "Workplace transport is a key feature of a huge variety of work settings, and can include everything from lorries and cars moving around a site to the use of diggers and fork-lift trucks.
"The need for its effective management, as well as the management of occupational road risk, therefore cuts across industry boundaries.
"Our speakers will cover a range of important issues, including the culture associated with the use of vehicles at work and the need for good communication between clients and contractors."
