Parentless holidays and the travel accident risks

Every year, around 100,000 teenagers from the UK will leave home shores for their first ever parentless holiday. Although for many this important rite of passage will go well, leaving them to return happy and emboldened, a small minority will suffer a travel accident; something that can set them back in their journey to full-fledged adulthood.

There are a lot of factors that can lead a teenager to suffering a travel accident on this first parent-free holiday. One of these is alcohol; 45% of teenagers admit to drinking excessively on their first independent holiday, which, aside from the risks inherent in much typical drunken behaviour, also means many will be dehydrated and below par when it comes to participating in hazardous activities such as driving, skiing, snowboarding, water sports and rock climbing.

However, not all holiday-related accidents are attributable to the mere recklessness of youth; many are actually caused by the negligence of third parties such as tour operators, travel guides, hotels, restaurants and road users.

It is in these cases, where it can be established that the actions of another party have had some direct effect in causing travel injury, that anyone affected may be able to claim compensation.

Worryingly, considering the many risks involved, it is estimated that around one in five teenagers will take their first parent-free holiday without ensuring they have travel insurance in place. This can lead to a multitude of problems, not least the expense involved in obtaining medical care.

An insurance expert comments, "Your first parent free holiday can be a great experience but because of their age and new found freedom, fledgling holiday makers can be one of the most at risk groups. We are encouraging teens to be prepared and stay safe so their holiday can be one to remember for all the right reasons."

While a spokesperson from a leading no win, no fee specialists comments, "Although travel insurance is important I would recommend cover for anyone travelling abroad it is not the be all and end all when it comes to making a claim, as it has little impact on a claimant's ability to claim compensation."
