When compared to workplaces such as farms, fisheries and mines the risk of a work-related accident is relatively low in an office environment. Although this does not mean that managers can ignore health and safety measures, it does mean that the process of risk assessment can be simplified.
As such, in 2010 the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) announced the introduction of the "20 minute" risk assessment.
In short, it was a response to the need for a more expedient, less red-tape encumbered approach to risk assessments for the relatively low risk environment of the British workplace.
It allowed businesses to employ a risk assessment by using a simple online HSE tool. However, despite being only a 20 minute process, it asks businesses specific questions about their needs then generates risk assessment which highlights specific areas of required action.
Commenting on the online work related accident prevention tool, Judith Hackett, the HSE's chair commented, "Many people assume that risk assessments need to be long, formal documents covering every hazard, no matter how minor or unlikely to occur. That's not the case and the new 20-minute risk assessments make it clear that this can be done for any office quickly and easily.
"We've previously provided example risk assessments to help people identify the sort of risks they should be considering, but this goes one step further in helping employers actually do the assessment for offices.
"Employers know their businesses better than anyone - and with a little helping hand they can easily consider what is necessary to protect workers. Complying with the law in a low risk business can be done with common sense by anyone."
Anyone wishing to perform an online risk assessment for their workplace can use the HSE tool, which can be found here.
