In 2010 everyone in the UK received a stark reminder of the cruel and even arbitrary-seeming way asbestosis becomes manifest when a 32-year-old man became the asbestos lung disease's youngest ever victim, leaving his bereft family seeking asbestosis legal advice.
Following the man's death, which was preceded by a seven-year battle with the illness, an inquest was held at a coroner's court in Leicester, where it was heard that he had died from mesothelioma (sometimes referred to as asbestosis) as a direct result of being exposed to asbestos fibres present on his step father's work overalls.
It is a tragic image; the boy playing happily on his stepfather's knee, obliviously inhaling microscopic fibres that over more than twenty-years would incubate until forming a cancer that, after seven years of brave resistance, would ultimately take his life.
The deceased man's mother recounted that her son "would sit on his stepfather's knee when he came home from work listening to nursery rhymes and playing games."
Yet, because his stepfather worked as a scaffolder in a power station where pipes were commonly lagged with asbestos, he would frequently return home with his clothes covered in the deadly dust.
As such, it was left to the family to receive asbestosis legal advice; after consulting a personal injury lawyer, they decided to proceed with a claim. This lawyer outlined some of the reasons for commencing a claim, citing the fact that the man "died from an entirely preventable asbestos-related cancer."
He added, "At the time he was exposed there was a large amount of evidence showing there was a risk of mesothelioma developing from a low-level exposure to asbestos."
