Asbestosis compensation and worries over workers involved in the manufacture of sporting goods
There are fears that people who work in the manufacture of frames for tennis racquets and bicycles may one day become the victims of a new epidemic of workplace illnesses similar to those that belong to the category of asbestos cancers.
As we approach the peak of asbestos cancer deaths and resluting mesothelioma and asbestosis compensation claims caused by the use of asbestos in the last century, many scientists and health and safety experts are warning that we need to be alert to the possible risks posed by the manufacture of certain tennis racquets and bicycle frames.
These worries centre around the use of carbon nanotubes in the construction of these pieces of sporting equipment. These worries have gathered credence in recent months after Professor Ken Donaldson from the University of Edinburgh showed in a study that nanotubes cause damage to the lungs in a very similar way to asbestos.
The study, published in Nature and Nanotechnology, showed that carbon nanotubes, which are around 1/50,000th the size of a single strand of hair, are able to pass through the outer lining of the lung.
Medical director of the British Lung Foundation, Dr Noemi Elser commented on the need to address the issues identified by the study, saying, "It is imperative that the questions raised by this research are answered before the commercial use of long carbon nanotubes becomes widespread. We must be vigilant about preventing future exposure."
Others have commented on the need to protect those who are most at risk: workers manufacturing carbon nanotube-reliant tennis racquets and bicycle frames. Dr Anthony Seaton from the Institute of Occupational Medicine comments, "Those tubes that resemble asbestos should be treated as though they were asbestos and regulated accordingly. In this way, workers involved in their manufacture, use and ultimate disposal will be protected."
