Hearing the news that you have asbestosis or another asbestos-related illness can be devastating and the making of an asbestosis compensation claim may be the only form of redress against those responsible for the asbestos exposure. Unfortunately, the prognosis for asbestos cancer sufferers will often be that their condition is terminal. Getting the diagnosis right is therefore essential to ensure that any unnecessary emotional distress is kept to a minimum.
For Coronation Street actor Ken Cope, this was not the case. After being diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2000, Cope had assigned himself an early death. Naturally, he believed his doctor's diagnosis and saw no reason to question it.
The 78-year-old who plays TV drama character, Jed Stone, was led to believe that he was suffering from an incurable cancer when actually his doctor had made a mistake and failed to notify him that he was actually clear of the disease.
It was not until Ken demanded to see copies of his medical files and examined them in detail that he discovered a letter which gave him the all clear from the asbestos-related cancer. After confronting his doctor with the misdiagnosis and the subsequent cover up, Ken expected some form of apology for his actions but instead was turned away and was refused counseling to cope with the misdiagnosis.
Worse still, the Corrie actor was later accused of "verbal abuse" towards the Practice Manager and was struck off their list of patients. Furious Ken said:
"I spent six years of my life wrongly believing I had cancer, literally under a false death sentence because of a wrong diagnosis. Then I found that my GP had been told two years earlier that I'd never had cancer - but he didn't bother or forgot to tell me."
Unfortunately Ken's experience is not unique and misdiagnosis of these cancers does happen. Thankfully for Ken though it has meant that he has the all clear and no longer has the worry that such a diagnosis can bring.
