Although the asbestosis rate is expected to peak around 2014, until all asbestos is removed from places where humans might come into direct contact with the deadly substance, the threat remains ever-present.
One of the surest ways the government can reduce the risk of modern day workers suffering exposure is by the use of safety information campaigns.
However, not all campaigns are effective, and sometimes hundreds of thousands of pounds can be spent trying to disseminate a safety message with little tangible effect.
This makes it all the more satisfying for occupational safety professionals when clear evidence emerges that a safety message has got through to its target audience.
This was the case for the Health and Safety Executive in 2010 when its "Hidden Killer" campaign won the gong for outstanding achievement in public relations at the European Excellence Awards.
Drawing on the influence of former England footballer and onetime plasterer Ian Wright, the campaign, which was featured on GMTV and Radio 4, contributed to a 100% increase in calls to the HSE's telephone infoline. Furthermore, it coincided with a 600% rise in the number of visitors to the HSE's relevant website page.
HSE spokesperson Steven Coldrick said that he was satisfied to have raised awareness of "Britain's biggest workplace killer".
He also said that much of the campaign was aimed at combating "the perception that it is largely a risk of the past" and that it was necessary to "capture the imagination of tradesmen, particularly young ones.
"Using Ian Wright, a former tradesman, ticked all the boxes for us and delivered great results," he added.
It can only be hoped that the campaign has an impact on reducing the future incidence of diseases such as asbestosis.
