Asbestos warts as an indictor of negligent asbestos exposure

There are many diseases and illnesses associated with asbestos exposure and most are compensable, however, the little known condition of asbestos warts is not life threatening, and although bothersome, is relatively harmless.

The use of asbestos for its flame retardant properties was prevalent in the mid to late 19th century with many industries including, engineering, construction and automotive manufacturing freely using it. However, various health issues were soon discovered and strict guidelines for its use were instigated.

Eventually, after it was found that inhalation of asbestos fibres could prove fatal, the European Union, banned all new asbestos use, and extraction, manufacture and processing of asbestosis products.

There are now strict guidelines in place for those who are likely to disturb asbestos-containing materials and where asbestos removal is required, contractors must be licensed by the Health and Safety Executive.

Asbestos warts
Asbestos warts are caused when asbestos fibres become embedded in unprotected skin. The microscopic fibres are relatively sharp and their physical characteristics are such that once they have penetrated the epidermis, it cannot easily dispel them.

The area around the fibre may become inflamed and, if left, a callous-like formation will be apparent on the skin.

Fortunately asbestos warts present little threat of becoming malignant or spreading, but their presence is a good indicator that the sufferer has been exposed to asbestos. Anyone who has been diagnosed with asbestos warts should ask their GP for more information on the likelihood of further asbestos-related disease.

There is little readily available data or research to suggest any statistical link to the further development of asbestosis or mesothelioma for anyone who has asbestos warts, but in a disputed case of asbestos compensation, the presence of the callouses could be seen as strong evidence that the person has not been adequately protected from asbestos exposure.
