Asbestos materials were commonly used in different aspects of building work up until 2000, and any building which was built before this time could potentially contain the hazardous material.
However, asbestos only becomes dangerous and capable of causing diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis when it has been disturbed or damaged, and although most of time asbestos materials do not pose a threat to people using a building, it is vital for employers to protect the safety of their workers if asbestos is present in a working environment.
If an employer is unsure whether there are asbestos materials in the workplace, they may decide to have an asbestos survey carried out to establish any risks which members of staff may be facing.
Asbestos surveys are not a legal requirement for businesses and organisations, however, if an employer has come to suspect that a building has asbestos materials present, it is recommended that they have the survey done.
During an asbestos survey, sampling and analysis help determine whether asbestos has been used in the building, therefore it is important that a survey is only carried out by a competent surveyor who has received the proper training and qualifications.
After the survey, the employer will receive accurate details about the amount, location and types of asbestos materials on the premises.

If an asbestos survey reveals that any materials have been disturbed or damaged, an employer will need to take appropriate actions to prevent workers from inhaling the dangerous particles and developing a disease, such as asbestosis or mesothelioma.
Under these circumstances, an employer will need to seek help from a licensed asbestos contractor who will either be able to repair the asbestos-containing products or, where they cannot be repaired, remove the materials and the inherent risk.
Asbestos should never be disposed of along with normal waste as it is classed as hazardous waste and must only be disposed of at a licensed waste disposal site.
