How asbestos exposure fears can lead to closure of schools

Every September school-aged children return to the nation's classrooms after the long summer break. However, on occasions, the risk of the industrial disease together with the wish of education authorities to prevent asbestos compensation cases from occurring in the future means that children must wait before returning to their schools.

In 2009 the start of the school year is a case in point: several schools announced that they would have to delay the new term in order to remove asbestos and protect pupils and teachers from the risk of diseases such asbestosis and mesothelioma.

For example, a school in Doncaster had to remain closed several days past the summer holidays due to the discovery of asbestos during building work.

The school's headteacher commented, "Following the discovery of asbestos in heating ducts below ground in the school during the summer holidays there is still some essential safety work to be carried out before pupils and staff can access the building.
"The health and safety of our children and staff is paramount and we are working closely with the contractors in order for children to return to school as quickly as possible."

Of course, it was not the only school to deal with a new term asbestos alert. A school in Greater London had to close for one day after workmen found the deadly substance in its boiler room. However, once the threat had been assessed and it was decided there was no risk of the kind of exposure that might result in future asbestos compensation payouts, the school swiftly reopened.

A school statement read, "On Friday the local authority were notified that the Health and Safety Executive had granted a waiver to allow the clean up works to commence at the school. The reason for not granting the waiver is that the HSE assessed there to be no immediate threat to the safety of children or adults on the premises."

Claim asbestos compensation
Where schools and businesses respond appropriately to the risk of asbestos exposure, there will be little risk to the health of workers.

However, in cases where workers have been exposed the consequences can be catastrophic. Although, due to their long incubation periods, the effects of diseases such as mesothelioma take a long time to make themselves known, once apparent their progress is quick and devastating.

If you or a close family member has been diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness, it may be possible to claim compensation for your pain and losses.
