Armley play commemorates asbestos compensation pioneer

The search for asbestos compensation is, naturally, incredibly important to those families affected by the toxic dust. To the town of Armley in Yorkshire, however, the real-life story of one woman's fight for industrial disease compensation proved so important that a play was written for the 2009 I Love West Leeds festival and produced by the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

The play, called Dust, takes the story of a woman diagnosed in 1993 with the fatal asbestos cancer as its plot, as she struggled to take an Armley factory's American parent company to court. The play uses transcripts from that trial, in which her compensation claim was eventually successful, to create some of the dialogue, alongside letters and interviews, and takes an abandoned factory for its poignant theatre space.

A Labour councillor for Armley said it was "essential the story is told." Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases are sadly common in the Leeds area, and memories of people, including the play's heroine, playing in the toxic dust as it fell from the sky in the 1930s have been reported in the area's press.

The director of the 2009 festival said that her reason for putting on the play was that "It's still a current story and it will be for a while, unfortunately." But it is through precedent-setting actions, such as those of the play's central character, that work to protect people from industrial disease and to compensate those who suffer from it have become an established practice. The three-year case that provides the narrative for this play has been credited with setting a precedent that allowed thousands of people with similar diagnoses to claim mesothelioma compensation.
