Asbestos compensation for textile workers

Over the years, industrial disease solicitors have seen most instances of asbestos compensation awarded to workers in the fields of construction, mining, shipbuilding and transport maintenance, and asbestos removal. However, despite prior claims from some parties that chrysotile asbestos is not as carcinogenic as brown (amosite) or blue (crocidolite) asbestos, research revealed in 2009 aimed to prove otherwise.

The primary producers of chrysotile or white asbestos are Canada, Russia and Italy, who have all, at one time or another, promoted it as safer than brown or blue asbestos due to its curly (serpentine) fibres and its usual inhabitancy of resin or a cement like material which means it is less susceptible to crumbling and giving off dust and fibres, thus rendering it less likely to cause asbestos-related diseases, such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Amongst other things, chrysotile asbestos is used to make woven materials and researchers from Nevada and North Carolina, USA, aimed to provide proof that white asbestos is linked to an increased incidence of asbestos-related illness and deaths amongst textile workers exposed to chrysotile.

The study group comprised a cohort of 5770 workers who had worked for at least one day between 1st January 1950 and 31st December 1973 in any of four textile producing plants in North Carolina.

A historical exposure to asbestos was evaluated for each worker by comparing estimated work histories with 3,578 industrial hygiene measurements taken between 1935 and 1986.

Mortality of the cohort was then measured against the national standardised mortality ratios (SMRs).

Overall, the asbestos workers suffered a 47 per cent increase in overall mortality when compared to the general population, with a 41 percent increase in mortality as a result of all types of cancer and a 95 per cent increase due to lung cancer. There was a significant increase of SMRs for pleural cancer, mesothelioma, and pneumoconiosis.

The study also revealed that the risk of lung cancer and asbestosis increased with cumulative exposure to asbestos fibres and concluded that chrysotile asbestos in textile manufacturing can be associated with increased risk of asbestos related disease. Workers who have contracted such diseases would be extremely likely to be eligible to make an asbestos compensation claim.
