Demolition workers and asbestos compensation claims
As the years go by, more and more people are having to turn to personal injury solicitors in search of asbestos compensation. The peak in asbestos compensation claims is not expected until around 2015 and, up until then, the sad fact is that thousands of people will be diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis and other asbestos-related diseases each year.
Even once the peak in asbestos compensation claims is reached, we will still see a significant number of people being diagnosed with various asbestos-related medical conditions. This is because the diseases may take longer to appear in some people than others, and some workers may have been exposed towards the end of the period in which asbestos was a legal building material.
Demolition workers still at risk
However, even though asbestos has been banned since the 1980s, those working in the construction industry still regularly come into contact with it in the course of their job. Unfortunately, this means that we could still be seeing asbestos compensation claims being made many years into the future.
Demolition workers are particularly at risk of contracting asbestos-related diseases because if a building containing asbestos is brought down without the asbestos first being removed, it is difficult to control where the substance ends up and it creates a lot of dust. It is this dust which poses a high risk to health, as the tiny asbestos fibres get stuck in the lungs.
Speaking after the prosecution of a firm which had failed to remove asbestos cement sheets before demolishing a building, a spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said: "All people working in areas that may contain asbestos need to be aware of the dangers to others and the financial penalties imposed if asbestos is mishandled.
"The risks from asbestos cement are lower than from other asbestos materials but contractors still need to take proper precautions," she advised.
