The scientists, who convened at a meeting of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had their findings reported by the journal The Lancet Oncology.
They also stated that "all types of asbestos are carcinogenic to humans", confirming that even minerals such as vermiculite pose enough of a threat to pose a cancer risk.
They also raised additional fears, by stating that there was "limited evidence" that asbestos may be linked to bowel cancer, throat cancer and stomach cancer.
John Edwards of Sheffield's Northern General Hospital, responded to the findings by saying, "More research needs to be carried out and we need more funding to do this."
