The scale of the incidence of asbestos-related diseases in the UK leaves no room for complacency on the part of insurers facing asbestos compensation liability, nor does it leave any room for forgetting the greatest industrial tragedy in our history.
In fact, the terrible legacy we've inherited from the deadly substance compares with that of any nation in the world. This is illustrated by a study that was reported in the British Cancer Journal, which tells us that in 2005 there were 1,749 mesothelioma deaths recorded among UK males, the worst rate of any country.
The same study confirms that carpenters born in the 1940s carry a greater risk of developing an illness than people from any other occupation. One in 17 carpenters born during this decade will go on to develop mesothelioma, while the added risk of other cancers puts the asbestos death rate at a staggering one in 10.
But it is not only carpenters from the asbestos era who live with the spectre of fatal illness. The British Cancer Journal study reported that around two-thirds of UK men and one-quarter of all women have worked with the deadly substance at some point in their careers.
Lead researcher Professor Julian Peto, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Institute of Cancer Research, commented, "The UK has the highest death rate from mesothelioma in the world.
"The risk is highest in people who were exposed to asbestos before age 30.
"By getting information on all the jobs people had ever done we have shown that the risk in some occupations, particularly in the building industry, is higher than we previously thought.
"New regulations introduced in 1970 reduced exposure to asbestos in factories but heavy exposure to the much larger workforce in construction and various other industries continued."
What is particularly worrying is that while revealing that the scale of illness and exposure is much greater than previously accepted the study does nothing to dispel predictions that illness rate has not yet even reached its high-water mark.
