The debate surrounding pleural plaques and the 2007 decision by Law Lords to rescind the right of sufferers to be able to claim asbestos compensation was a long running political quagmire that saw all sorts of organisations get involved in attempts to put pressure on the government to overturn the 2007 decision.
In October 2009, ChronicleLive.co.uk published their take on the issue; relating the story of one pleural plaques victim who, like many others, lived with debilitating symptoms and the constant fear of developing mesothelioma, the asbestos-related cancer which almost always proves fatal.
The 79-year-old former boiler-maker from Newcastle had come into contact with asbestos when he worked at the Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend, and, after his pleural plaques diagnosis in 2006, suffered from chronic shortness of breath which left him barely able to walk at times.
The prospective asbestos compensation claimant said, "Something has to be done this autumn. It has taken far too long.
"I have said before, I would rather have the illness taken away than compensation, but I am still hopeful for good news" he added.
A consultation on pleural plaques was launched in October 2008, but despite a number of scheduled dates for the government's response, reaction was drawn out and victims of negligent asbestos exposure were left wondering whether they would ever be able to make a claim.
The Chronicle took up the campaign in January 2009 and lobbied all North East MPs as well as top union bosses. They alleged that all got "on board" and joined them in their fight.
