While it is true that asbestos, despite its dangers being well known, still exists in many UK public buildings including schools, it is also true that the substance is thought not to be a risk to health unless it becomes disturbed, in which case it is classified as high risk, not least because those exposed may develop illness and be entitled to receive asbestos compensation.
What is clear is that until the day arrives when asbestos is no longer present in our public buildings, it will always pose some form of latent risk.
This fact was highlighted in 2011 when a Welsh school had to remain closed past the winter holidays because floodwaters had disturbed the hazardous substance.
The decision to close the school was made after experts, including staff from the Health and Safety Executive, inspected the premises and found that potentially deadly brown asbestos had been disturbed on the site.
Brown asbestos is considered to be one of the most hazardous forms of the substance and was used a great deal in the 40s, 50s and 60s as a thermal insulator.
At the time of the potential liability compensation scare, the school's headmaster commented, "The school theatre, corridors, the two gymnasiums and the kitchen have been affected, and this has left us with a massive headache at the start of the new term.
"The problem is compounded by brown asbestos which was in the kitchen ceiling and I understand this is the worst asbestos to deal with.
"I have to wait for the Health and Safety Executive to give me the all-clear when it's safe to reopen the kitchen."
Cases such as these underline just how vigilant we must all remain in the ongoing fight against asbestos, however "hidden" the risk may sometimes seem.
Claim compensation for an asbestos-related illness
Tragically, hundreds of people in the UK die each year as a result of the deadly illness mesothelioma. Compensation payments for this illness reflect its tragic impact and can be made either by the diagnosed individual or his or her surviving family members.
Settlements for illnesses such as asbestosis may be smaller, partly because they may take the form of provisional damages, which allow the affected party to claim a larger sum in the event there is a deterioration in their condition.
