The payment of a six figure sum in asbestos compensation helped a Plymouth woman to get groundbreaking treatment for her mesothelioma in 2008/2009.
The woman contracted the deadly asbestos cancer through contact with her father who was an asbestos lagger in Devonport Dockyard, and after her initial diagnosis in November 2006 doctors told her she would live for only six to nine months.
One year after her diagnosis the Ministry of Defence paid her the asbestos compensation and the woman decided to use it to fund her own private treatment in Germany.
Dr Thomas Vogl, head of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at JW Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt, has developed a treatment for mesothelioma called chemoembolisation. The treatment involves the injection of powerful cytotoxic drugs selectively into the tumour and then, by cutting off the vascular supply to the mass, the drugs are held in the affected region for several weeks while they try to diminish the cancerous growth.
The mesothelioma patient from Plymouth had been receiving the injections periodically since May 2008 and reports were released in the press that by June 2009 the tumour had shrunk by 83 per cent.
Calls, via an online petition, were made to the government to ensure that all mesothelioma patients get treatment for the disease in the UK rather than having to travel abroad and the petitioners also asked to see chemoembolisation trialled in the UK with a view to it becoming a standardised treatment for the asbestos cancer.
The petition gained 1,473 online signatures.
For this woman the completion of her asbestos compensation case in a relatively short time meant that she was able to get a treatment that has significantly prolonged her life.
