Asbestos compensation and British Safety Council calls for a national audit of schools

Diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis have formed part of the UK's worst ever industrial tragedy: asbestos. Countless lives have been lost and thousands left bereaved, while insurers been made to pay billions of pounds in asbestos compensation. And, even now, the tragedy has not reached its end, with more still needed to be done, according to the British Safety Council.

With sixteen teachers dying each year, 228 over the past 14 years, from a disease related to the deadly substance, the organisation has called for an urgent audit of all schools in the UK, a call that has been backed by the National Union of Teachers.

Chief executive of the British Safety Council Brian Nimrick told a conference on corporate responsibility, "It is unacceptable that the UK, in 2009, has not yet undertaken a national audit of asbestos in schools, has not comprehensively assessed the risks that teachers and pupils in each and every school face; and has not allocated appropriate resources to take urgent remedial action.

"In 2009 it is estimated that more than 4,000 people will die from cancers caused by past exposure to asbestos in the workplace - making it the greatest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK.

"In the short-term school heads and chairs of governors may want to ask themselves this question: 'Would you allow members of your family to attend a school or college where the asbestos risk had not been assessed?'"

While a spokeswoman for the Department of Children, Schools and Families implied that schools that fail to comply with existing HSE requirements risk not only the health of staff and pupils but also liability for asbestos compensation. She said, "The health and welfare of pupils and staff is absolutely paramount.

"By law, tough, robust processes must be in place in schools to carefully monitor asbestos which we and the Health and Safety Executive continually assess.

"It is unacceptable for local authorities and school employers not to fully comply - no ifs or buts."
