The Hidden Killer; how to avoid needing asbestos compensation

In 2008 the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched a campaign aimed at tradesmen and construction workers to warn them of asbestos dangers related to their work before an asbestos compensation case became necessary.

"Asbestos The Hidden Killer", fronted its campaign with the statistic that "every week 20 tradesmen die from asbestos-related disease." It also revealed that anyone who works on a building that was built or refurbished before the year 2000, risks exposure to asbestos.

Chiefly aimed at construction workers; electricians, plumbers, joiners and general tradesmen, the campaign aimed to increase awareness amongst the building trade of the prevalence of asbestos in buildings around the UK, and the inherent dangers of being unprepared to encounter asbestos.

Evaluation of the campaign showed that 74% of the respondents agreed strongly that the campaign had encouraged them to take more safety precautions when working. Further, 67% felt strongly that the campaign had given them a greater understanding of who is at risk from asbestos.

The campaign attempted to dispel the view that asbestos-related illness is a risk associated with the past and that asbestos was primarily a problem associated with older generations of workers.

When asked their opinion on the statement, "Asbestos is a thing of the past as it not used in building materials anymore so there is not much risk of being exposed to it today.", 34% of respondents that were electricians agreed to some degree prior to the campaign. After the campaign, 21% agreed to some degree. In plumbers, pre-campaign 40% of respondents agreed to some degree and post campaign that figure lowered to 25%. Amongst other trades there was a reduction of respondents who agreed to some degree from 53% pre-campaign to 33% post campaign.
