Testing for harmful asbestos dust
Asbestosis is an industrial disease which can de defined as an irreversible scarring of the lungs that causes them to become increasingly difficult to expand and subsequently makes breathing both tricky and painful.
Asbestosis claims and pursuits for compensation associated with other asbestos-related diseases are becoming more prevalent within today's society, particularly among those who either currently work in the construction industry or have done in the past.
If you are required to work with building materials such as insulation boards, lagging and cement products that are likely to contain asbestos then it is your employer's responsibility to make sure that you are not exposed to any of the dangerous dust that it can produce.
It is essential that the employees of builders, construction workers and anyone else who may be required to demolish materials used in properties built between the 1950s and 1980s carry out asbestos sampling and analysis. This could protect their employees from contracting a progressive and fatal illness such as mesothelioma or the equally unpleasant asbestosis and make having to face an asbestosis claim being against them far less likely.
Asbestos sampling and analysis
This is a specialist skill that should only be carried out by experienced, authorised people. There are various kinds of asbestos sampling:
Bulk sampling: taking a piece of solid material from products such as wall panels
Wipe testing: taking samples of dust from surfaces
Air sampling: drawing air through a pump where fibres can be retained in a filter
Disturbance air testing: taking a sample of air when dust is airborne, such as when a door is opened or closed
Once asbestos sampling has been completed there are two standard tests for analysis, either of which may be carried out by a company bearing endorsement from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service. The more economical method involves use of an optical microscope whereas the more accurate approach is via electron microscopy.
