The dangers of asbestos are such that absolute scrupulousness is demanded of anyone who is charged with dealing with the substance. Never has this been so clearly exemplified as during the decommissioning and destruction of the world's first nuclear power plant, Calder Hall, Sellafield, when all workers involved had to follow a carefully programmed safety-first plan in order to remove 2,300 tonnes of asbestos cladding from the site; anything less could have easily resulted in asbestos claims being made in the future.
It would be tempting to assume that the chief hazard involved in the demolition of a nuclear power plant would involve the removal of radioactive materials such as uranium or plutonium; not so, according to those involved in the project.
The Calder Hall project manager, Ian Williams, explained, "People always think that the most hazardous work at Sellafield involves managing radioactivity but this is not always the case.
"Asbestos is a dangerous material and we have had to employ specialist contractors to help with this work.
"At any one time we had some 100 men working in arduous and confined conditions and we're very proud of our safety record.
"At no time were any workers exposed to asbestos."
Indeed, the project's managers were so careful in ensuring that no workers were exposed to the substance, and the consequent risk of illnesses such as mesothelioma and asbestosis, that £26 million was spent solely on asbestos removal.
Much of the removal work was complicated by the fact that not all the asbestos had been kept at a constant temperature, meaning that the substance's stability could not be guaranteed.
A spokesperson from industrial illness compensation specialist YouClaim commented, "The work at Calder Hall is a textbook example of how asbestos removal operations should be managed. Specialist contractors were used, no expense spared and no risk taken.
"Tragically, over the years not all asbestos-related work has been carried out with the same level of care. Time and again workers involved in this work have suffered illness as a result. In such cases it is the right of those affected to make asbestos claims."
