Now that we are in the 21st century it is possible to say with confidence and without fear of contradiction that cigarettes, no matter which brand you smoke, harm your health and have the potential to kill you.
However, the risk inherent in smoking cigarettes is both clearly defined and clearly displayed, by health bodies and tobacco companies alike. In contrast, what the smoker certainly doesn't expect is that by smoking he or she may have grounds to instruct an asbestos claim solicitor.
Yet it is also true that certain brands of Chinese-manufactured cigarettes actually contain high levels of asbestos-containing industrial plasterboard.
These cigarettes, which also contain a deadly cocktail of dangerous chemicals, are actually brought to the UK by illegal importers and then sold on the black-market.
The World Health Organisation has been so alarmed by the trade in these cigarettes, which sell for about £25 per carton, that it has called their manufacture and sale "the most disturbing new development in the illegal tobacco trade anywhere in the world."
"They are flooding into Europe," WHO adds.
Jin Ling brand are one of the asbestos-containing brands known to be circulating in the UK. A trading standards officer comments on the threat facing consumers, "This particular brand is made to be smuggled, it is not a brand which can be bought [legally] in shops.
"Because of that, there is no quality control there is no doubt they are dangerous and the people who make them have no interest in what they are selling or who they are selling it to."
Other groups have been keen to point out that even legal cigarettes contain health-harming chemicals and that smoking may result in death.
"Your average packet of 20 bought down the local shop contains a horrendous list of poisons and toxins used in batteries, industrial solvents, chemical weapons and preserving dead bodies," says a spokesperson from anti-smoking group Fresh.
The fact that these smuggled cigarettes are illegal and sold on the black-market means it is unlikely that an asbestos claim solicitor would consider representing an asbestos cigarette claim.
