Asbestos claim campaigner disappointed by MPs' response

Many an asbestos claim is hampered by a lack of information concerning the whereabouts of the liability insurers of a defunct business. This is largely due to the amount of time many cases of asbestos-related illness take to become diagnosable.

Some workers may find their asbestos illness, mesothelioma per se, is not diagnosed until twenty or thirty years after they left the workplace where they were most likely to have been exposed to the deadly fibres. It is only then that they find out that the business has ceased trading and sometimes tracing those who would be responsible for the settlement of an asbestos claim becomes impossible.

Despite numerous calls for the Government to initiate the Employers' Liability Bureau which would have a pot of cash available to help asbestos victims whose employers have gone out of business, by October 2010 the scheme had still not been given the go ahead.

Around that time, David Trigg, chairman of the Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team, sent letters to East Midland's MPs making calls for them to lobby Government on the setting up of the scheme.

Yet, one month after the letters were sent, only one MP had replied in writing.

Mr Trigg said in the Derbyshire Telegraph, "It's terrible. The only MP who has been really positive is Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood, who has invited me to go and have a chat with her.

"Margaret Beckett has replied and said she will enquire into the issue."

Representatives of the newspaper attempted to contact the MPs concerned to find out why they had not responded to the campaigner's letter – Conservative MPs Heather Wheeler, for South Derbyshire, and Nigel Mills, for Amber Valley, and Labour MP for Derby North Chris Williamson, all said that they did not recall receiving the letter.

However, Mr Mills said he was fully aware of the issue and had met with staff from the asbestos support team.

Mr Williamson said he supported asbestos illness sufferers and was planning to speak at an upcoming event on the subject.

Conservative MP for Erewash Jessica Lee told the newspaper that, although she had not received the letter, she would be delighted to hear from Mr Trigg.

According to the publication, Conservative MPs Patrick McLoughlin, for Derbyshire Dales, and Pauline Latham, for mid-Derbyshire were "unavailable for comment".
