Avoid an asbestos claim by disposing of hazardous materials safely

Asbestos can be very dangerous if the fibres and dusts are released into the air, and although most people do not need to worry about asbestos-related illnesses, some housing residents and site workers do sustain serious damage to their health due to asbestos ingestion and consequently have to make an asbestos claim.

People who have asbestos in their homes are not usually in any danger unless the asbestos particles are disturbed. If a resident does decide to have the asbestos materials removed, they should hire a tradesperson who has the correct equipment and proper training to do so.

When asbestos materials need to be disposed of, they should under no circumstances be included in any household waste. Asbestos is classed as hazardous waste and needs to be taken to a licensed waste disposal site, or a resident may need to arrange to have it collected.

Asbestos waste materials should be double-bagged or double-wrapped in UN approved packaging with the relevant warning signs attached. Generally, the material is sealed in a red inner-bag before being put in a clear outer-bag which displays the Carriage of Dangerous Goods (CDG) warning sign.

When a person is sealing asbestos materials, they should bear in mind that sharp objects could puncture the packaging, and the bags should not be over filled.

Waste water which may be contaminated with traces of asbestos can be discharged into the sewage system. Materials such as an asbestos cement sheet should be disposed of in a lockable skip – a standard skip covered over by sheeting is not suitable for the purpose.

Residents can find out about local arrangements for asbestos disposal through their local council.

If a householder sees that another person is disposing of asbestos materials by fly-tipping or that they are removing the materials from a home in an unsafe way, they should report the case to their council's environmental health department.
