Asbestos was used widely in buildings constructed before 2000, and, when disturbed, asbestos particles can cause people to develop asbestosis or the incurable cancer mesothelioma which they may be able to make an asbestos claim for.
The dangers of asbestos materials are well known and widely reported, but the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's planned move into Kensington Palace put the risks of asbestos materials further into the media spotlight.
The Royal couple, who famously married in April 2011, announced plans to move from their two bedroom apartment into Kensington Palace in November 2011. However, it was reported that they would have to wait at least year before they could settle into their new home as it needed work carried out on it, including asbestos removal.
Before the Duke and Duchess announced their move, the most recent renovation of Kensington Palace was in 1960 during which time asbestos was a very popular material used to complete building work. It was reported that asbestos had been used for insulation, in floor and ceiling tiles and in other parts of the famous palace.
Asbestos materials were used in construction work completed during the 20th century due to its heat and fire retardant properties and the dangers it posed had not yet been discovered.
The presence of asbestos in the royal home raised awareness concerning the materials and information was released about the removal of the asbestos materials.
Kensington Palace has previously been home to Princess Diana and Princess Margaret, but remained uninhabited after Princess Margaret's death in 2002. The renovation work, with the removal of asbestos materials, was expected to be completed by the summer of 2013 when the Royal couple were predicted to move in.
