Learning how to treat whiplash and brain injury

A doctor in the US has become the first graduate of the world's only multi-module course devoted specifically to whiplash and brain injury traumatology.

Led by Arthur C. Croft, a brain injury, traumatology and whiplash expert, the Whiplash and Brain Traumatology programme was presented by the Spine Research Institute of San Diego.

The graduate, Dr Joel Stutzman, said, "Nearly three million whiplash injuries occur every year in the United States alone. Nearly half of these injuries result in long-term or permanent disability, including debilitating chronic pain. As physicians, it is our responsibility to learn as much as possible in order to help our patients achieve a positive clinical outcome. And this cutting-edge program is an ideal way to learn from one of the very best minds in this field of medical study.

"I recognize that continuing education and implementing the most current scientific methods of diagnosis and treatment are key in effectively dealing with this growing health issue."

He continues, "As our society becomes increasingly mobile, the incidence of injuries due to vehicle collisions continues to increase. The most common of these impact injuries is whiplash, which inflicts injury to not only the cervical region (neck), but also to the soft tissues that support and protect the entire spine.

"New evidence shows that often times such soft tissue injuries are not temporary as previously thought, and instead can produce painfully debilitating long-term effects. These negative effects can manifest not only as physical disabilities, but also as emotional issues such as depression and anxiety."

The course is specifically designed to equip doctors and health care practitioners with procedures to aid the successful treatment of car accident victims. Curriculum subjects include trauma management, forensic medicine applications and historical documentation of personal injury as well as successful case management of soft tissue injuries through the incorporation of chiropractic manipulation.

Dr Stutzman added, "The principles taught in this program equip physicians with the necessary education to effectively implement emerging medical applications in treating victims of whiplash and other trauma injuries. And being trained by Dr. Croft, who is a well-known and widely respected authority in this field of study, is a real privilege."

Dr. Arthur C. Croft is an expert in the field of brain injury traumatology and whiplash, and co-wrote the textbook on the subject of whiplash, "Whiplash Injuries: the Cervical Acceleration/Deceleration Syndrome", which is currently in its third edition.
