Hazardous cargo road traffic accident is nothing to laugh about

I know it's wrong, but at first, a headline regarding a recent road traffic accident in Turkey made me smile:

Accident made worse by bees

read the lead line, but as I looked into the story, it became all too obvious that there was no joviality attached to the piece and the personal injury sustained by around 20 car crash victims and rescue workers that day was greatly exacerbated by the presence of the usually only mildly annoying winged creatures.

A van, which had been stacked with beehives, crashed into a stationary truck on a motorway near Marmaris, a town renowned for its citrus flavoured honey, releasing swarms of angry bees upon the unsuspecting car accident victims.

As emergency workers rushed to the scene they were set upon by the insects, to the point where many fled to the safety of their vehicles.

Eventually, local beekeepers, dressed in protective clothing, attended the car accident to help those injured in the accident, but judging from footage shot at the scene, their rescue skills were not perhaps as proficient as the emergency workers left red and raw by the barrage of bee stings they had earlier experienced.

It was carnage really and at least one unfortunate personal injury victim died as a result. However, it is not yet clear whether his death was as a result of car accident injuries or bee stings.

And here is where my personal injury compensation head goes on - surely a truck load of bees is a very dangerous cargo and so, why were they not secured more rigorously. It appears, from the footage, that they were merely stacked onto the open bed of a pick-up truck, and as such the contents of the hives were in great danger of being let loose into the atmosphere.

The transportation of toxic substances, such as, gases and chemicals has a host of safety regulations and precautions prescribed, and so, it seems, this dangerous load would have been quite inadequately carried by comparison.

It may be of no comfort at the moment to those people caught up in the road traffic accident, but it is almost certain that they will be able to make compensation claims against the driver of the bee-laden van, or his employers, if he was working for another party. It would be their right to do so, certainly under UK civil law, so let's hope that the Turkish personal injury lawyers get straight on the case and help the road accident victims receive the personal injury damages they would deserve.
