Different cars, different attitudes

I've been driving for about seven years now and in that time I've driven fast cars, slow cars and even brand new cars. So, can I say that I've ever been treated differently in any one of those vehicles by other motorists on the roads and if so, which car put me at a higher risk of needing to make a compensation claim for a road accident?

Driving is always going to be a danger, especially when there are lots of drivers out there who seem to let their egos go to the top of their heads and put all us other drivers at risk of being involved in a serious car accident.

I've been making the same 40-mile round trip to work each day for the last two years and in that time I've driven several, very different, vehicles. It always surprises me to see how people react to me in my car, just from what they can see in the style of the vehicle and whether or not its number plate is in this millennium.

When I use to drive a P-reg Fiat Punto I can honestly say that I neither felt abused by bigger cars, nor did I look down on those with older, smaller vehicles. I fitted in with the roads quite comfortably but then one day somebody decided that they would lose their marbles and crash into my blessed Punto.

The Punto was a complete write-off but when I found out that I would be driving a brand new hire car in the form of a Ford Fiesta Zetec, I started to feel slightly better. Being just a couple of weeks old, I took the car to the roads as though I was the queen of motoring.

Although I felt like I could outrun most other drivers, I was very concerned about people driving near the shiny new car, after all, the last thing I wanted was either a claim on my car insurance or to be involved in a compensation claim battle. After having the car for almost six weeks, I finally received the money from the third party insurers to pay for a replacement car.

Faced with having some money in my bank account for a change, I decided to buy a vehicle that would be a little on the cheap side. I looked all around the classifieds and then finally on eBay I spotted the perfect model, a VW Polo 1989 model. It had been well taken care of and was in excellent condition, plus for just £250 I simply couldn't go wrong.

With only four gears I knew that I was going to be a slow driver on the motorway but I never realised just how much it would wind other motorists up. On my drive to work, cruising at a comfortable 65mph, I can honestly say that I've never had so many, I'm sorry to say male drivers, drive so close to my rear bumper. Going from a brand new model to an old and slow classic, there was a real change in other peoples' attitudes.

One of the aspects of driving an older model is that I believe many drivers think that an old biddy is behind the wheel and that's why the car's not travelling at 90mph like the rest of the lunatics on the road. It must be a real surprise when a white van driver who's been on my bumper for miles finally overtakes me to see that he's actually been intimidating a young, blonde female.

With plans to sell up and move to London, I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to never ever making the same 40-mile journey that I've been making for the last two years. Thank goodness that I haven't needed to contact a personal injury lawyer to make a compensation claim because some crazy driver has driven me off the road. Bring on the tube and its hordes of people; it can't be any worse than a dangerous driver on a power trip.
