Working with personal injury compensation claims, we have become rather fastidious about the following of health and safety protocols and regulations, especially when it comes to construction work. Spending our day dealing with the consequences of accidents that could so easily have been prevented with better risk management, we have become almost obsessed with spotting potential breaches of Health and Safety Executive requirements in and around the office.
It has almost become a rather macabre competition between us to spot the most potential accidents in day. Not dissimilar to the I Spy books children have for long journeys; our afternoons often involve spotting the most unusual potential personal injury.
Everyday life for us has become like a drawn out episode of Casualty – we have become astute to those moments just before an accident happens where in the well-loved BBC drama the camera would have a lingering close up of say, a ladder on an uneven surface which would then pan up to the man standing vulnerably on top.
Thankfully, real life rarely bares little relation to the hospital drama, and the worst personal injury we have witnessed so far is a colleague who managed to staple his finger after playing around with a stapler- certainly not a case with potential for a compensation claim.
However, in the last couple of weeks, we have had workmen decorating the outside of our building. Thanks to the construction accident knowledge we have built over the last few years, we were quick to recognise the platform they were using as a scissor lift and were pleased to see that it came with flashing lights and a noise to warn people of when it moved.
Our concerns rose however when the worker using the platform failed to don any protective headgear or anti-HAVS (hand arm vibration) gloves to operate the vibrating drill they were using. Had he not read the health and safety guidelines for operating vibrating machinery or using platforms such as the scissor lift?
We were slightly appeased though when we saw to our approval that he was wearing ear defenders to protect him from the drilling noise that was emanating from his drill. Sadly, he hadn't brought any spare ones for us.
Perhaps we are getting a bit too caught up with personal injury work. Maybe it's time for us to take a holiday, (but then think of all those potential holiday accidents that could happen while abroad!) Or perhaps it is time for us to accept that accidents do happen and thankfully when they do, there are wonderful people like us at YouClaim who can help people pick up the pieces and deal with the consequences.
If you want some advice regarding an accident that you have been in which you feel was not your fault, give the friendly people at YouClaim a call today on 0800 10 757 95 and we can give you personal injury advice.
