It is undoubtedly true that different personality types are differently suited to different occupations. In no occupation is this assertion truer than that of being a no win, no fee solicitor.
This is because the kind of work associated with being a no win, no fee solicitor involves so many different facets of a person's personality.
Almost a century ago the famous Swiss psychologist Carl Jung devised a system for measuring and defining personality. Even today, though with a few adjustments, this method of defining personality is still widely-used by occupational psychologists.
Under Jung's system there are sixteen significant personality types, which are formed from four major personality trait dichotomies. These dichotomies are:
Extraversion/introversion Whether someone is a quiet thinker' or a public doer'.
Sensing/intuition People who sense are often practically minded and exhibit great patience. While those who intuit are characterised by a high emotional intelligence or sixth sense' which can sometimes lead them to be considered wishy-washy dreamers'.
Thinking/feeling Thinkers' are highly analytical and sometimes suffer accusations of being cold and calculated. Feelers', on the other hand, are governed by a strong empathy for others and often invite accusations of being unbusiness-like'.
Judging/perceiving Judgers' are highly organised and like to work through tasks in an urgent but methodical manner until they have completed a task. Perceivers, in contrast, are considered to be spontaneous and unpredictable workers who can be brilliant and flamboyant just as easily as they can be bored and their attention-spans short.
An anecdotal survey of our panel of personal injury solicitors
Here at YouClaim we asked some of the no win, no fee solicitors on our personal injury panel to examine the these different personality types and tell us what they thought were the characteristics most essential to being a successful no win, no fee solicitor.
YouClaim's specialist no win, no fee claims spokesperson, Alex Boxall, reports on the response, "One thing all no win, no fee solicitors from the panel agreed on was that it doesn't matter whether you are an extrovert or an introvert.
"Some of the no win, no fee solicitors considered themselves extroverts, while others said they were introverts.
"Just about everyone agreed that that the ability to listen and empathise was a very important attribute as solicitors have to be able to be sensitive to people's needs at a crucial time making a personal injury compensation claim is no trivial matter.
"So inevitably they ranked feeling and intuiting high on the list of essential character types for any no win, no fee solicitor.
"But right across the board, all no win, no fee solicitors we asked felt that these more emotionally-based traits needed to be balanced by the rational traits more closely linked with professionalism, a strong capacity for objective thought and thoroughness.
"This meant that the need for strong thinking, sensing and judging personality components were also ranked extremely highly.
"I did point out to them all that, in theory, the personality type should be made up of four dominant elements, whereas they were telling me that a typical no win, no fee solicitor personality type was made up of five (feeling, intuition, thinking, sensing and judging).
"They had little truck with this argument and the reaction I got could only make me laugh, I think that with the number of hours most no win, no fee solicitors work, there is room in our working days for at least one more trait than is considered the norm."
