Personal injury worker finds positive side of a holiday accident

Holiday accidents can have positive aspects

One of the downsides to working for a personal injury company is the amount of bad news you read about each week - a serious work accident here, a horrible example of medical negligence there - so it's really a pleasant change to read about a holiday accident experience with a positive side.

This is not to say that I'm happy that two men ended up nursing a holiday injury each; I'm happy because it just so happened that three vacationing lifeguards were nearby when these two men crashed their jetskis.

The three boys were kneeboarding around a pier near Teignmouth at the time, which sounds dangerous in itself, but I guess they all knew they had each other to rely on should the worst happen. The other two didn't have that assurance, so it's great on all sorts of levels that the lifeguards were able to sort out the aftermath of the accident so well.

For example, the moment the threesome saw the smash, they were instantly disposed to go and help, and if we are going to believe the stories about the world going downhill we will have to deal with the fact that this is proof of three teenagers being actively altruistic. It's not as if it was an effort to rescue pretty girls, either - this was a jetski crash between two men of 59 and 62.

And it sounds like they know their stuff, too. One said, "We just acted instinctively. We went over and realised one of the men was quite seriously injured.

"The other man was trying to lift him on to his craft but we knew not to do this because it could make his injuries worse. We had to keep him as flat as possible."

That's also a positive thing, a sign that our youth are a force for good still - in terms of knowledge as well as the inclination to do good in the world.

And normally, this would be the bit where you'd expect to see a bit about how the world didn't respond appropriately to their actions, but no - not only have the boys appeared in their local paper, but a spokesperson from Teignmouth's RNLI praised their actions for the holiday injury victims. He said, "Their actions were very commendable and one can only admire their courage and tenacity. They did a very good job."

There's no comment yet from the victims - understandably, as one's still recovering in hospital from his personal injury - but it looks like they're recovering, from the press, and if the positivity surrounding this holiday accident story so far is anything to go by, I'm sure they're going to agree. It's the kind of news that rounds off a week of personal injury gloom nicely.

Can I claim?
