Compensation claim made for beauty pageant camel's death

Compensation claims are usually made for personal injury or damage to personal property. However in Saudi Arabia, a compensation claim for an astronomical £160,000 was made after a prize-winning camel was killed while it was out grazing.

The claim was made after the three-year-old camel, which was due to appear in one of the region's most popular beauty pageants, fell into a large hole dug in the desert made to store crude oil. According to the owner, the she-camel was grazing in the desert when she fell into the hole and tragically died.

Although the incident may not have caused any physical injury to the camel owner, as with the loss of a loved one, the loss of a pet can cause emotional upset, distress and in extreme cases, depression. While the possibility of forming a close emotional bond with a camel at first seems doubtful, in Arabia, camels are highly revered and worth fortunes. While they now have limited practical use outside of the tourist industry, breeding camels is still a highly lucrative business and a lot of money can be earned from breeding a potential prize winner.

Camel racing and camel beauty pageants are particularly popular around the country and attract large crowds to events. Much like a human beauty pageant, camel judges look for big eyes, long lashes and a pleasing body shape. During the winter, wealthy camel breeders often hold parties in the desert just to spend time with their camels and there is fierce competition between breeders to produce the most premium stock to take to pageants.

One male camel who earned celebrity status after winning first prize in a number of pageants was said to be worth more than £2.7 million and his owner received condolences from around the country when he died.

It is for this reason that the compensation sum reached a massive SR1 million or £160,000 which took into account the animal's superior breeding, enviable long lashes and supreme body shape. It is little wonder therefore that the owner made a compensation claim for his deceased pet - the financial loss of the camel alone must have caused him emotional trauma let alone the sadness associated with losing his prize pet.

No doubt the oil giant will ensure that all his future oil holes are either fenced off or away from wandering prize camels to save him from any future compensation claims.
