Safety procedures can prevent amusement park accidents

Luckily amusement park accidents are few and far between and generally safety procedures on rides are stringent and loaded with fail-safe mechanisms to protect riders and amusement park guests.

Unfortunately, an accident in July 2009 at the world famous Walt Disney World in Florida, US claimed the life of a worker and the ensuing investigation by US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has revealed serious safety breaches.

The accident occurred when a monorail train was being backed onto switch tracks at the end of the day (around 2am), however, the train managed to get onto the wrong tracks and collided with another monorail train in the station.

In video footage taken immediately after the crash, guests can be seen disembarking the train uninjured, but a driver was killed after his cab was crushed.

OSHA investigations found that Disney had ignored certain safety procedures outlined by the trains' manufacturer. Operation manuals warned that the trains should not be backed up without an observer in the rear of the train as the driver has a very limited view of the track behind the carriages.

At the time of the crash statements from a former driver of the monorail trains suggested that an anti-collision cut-off mechanism used to automatically halt the trains if they got within 500 ft of each other was typically required to be switched off as the trains went into overnight storage. Also, she said there should have been guidance from Monorail Central, the monorail's control centre, where a Kill Switch is available and possibly should have been utilised as the trains got too close to each other.

Although Disney quickly put in place new safety procedures for the backing up of trains, Federal regulators suggested that fines should be imposed against the corporation for the safety violations which resulted in a fatality and could have led to passenger claims after the amusement park accident.
