There is plenty of evidence to suggest that as temperatures get hotter workers are likely to become disorientated and sluggish, placing both themselves and their colleagues at greater risk of an accident at work.
With this in mind, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged for an upper limit to be introduced on the temperatures in the workplace.
Pointing out that a lower limit of 16OC is already in place for most workplaces (13OC for labour-intensive industries such as construction), the TUC believes that a similar system should be in place for hot weather to ensure that employees do not suffer during long and stultifying summer days. They have proposed an upper limit 24OC for most workplaces, suggesting that when the temperature surpasses this, workers should be sent home.
The ill effects of hot weather can be numerous, and include such things as headaches, dizzy spells, fatigue, cramps, fainting and loss of concentration: all things that have the potential to cause an accident at work.
Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, comments, "Even when the summers are bad, as last year's was, the temperature in some workplaces can be unbearable for employees and potentially dangerous in others. No one is expected to work in sub-zero temperatures but overheated employees are meant to carry on regardless of how high the office temperature soars."
Barber also warned that, with the impending threat of global warming, unless action was taken things would only get worse. "We need to see action now, before the impact of climate change is felt and our summers become hotter than ever," he said.
His concerns are supported by a recent survey, which shows that more than nine in ten employees found there workplaces to be too hot in the summer of 2008. Worryingly, 42% described their workplace as "unbearably hot" during the same summer.
