Accidents at work and working as a beach life guard

While many accidents at work may involve only a fall or a sprained muscle, for a beach lifeguard, a work accident could result in drowning and death. Working as a lifeguard is a heroic job that requires bravery, physical strength and skill. Any form of water, whether it is in a swimming pool or at sea, can be incredibly dangerous even for the most proficient of swimmers. While a lifeguard's job is to protect the safety of others, employers have a duty to ensure the lifeguard is not put in any undue risk. This includes providing sufficient training, appropriate clothing, and equipment.

Working as a beach lifeguard could involve cliff rescues, working in rocky coves and swimming in dangerous seas. Lifeguards are therefore vulnerable to a number of different hazards and need proper training to ensure they are able to cope with these risks.

Every beach lifeguard working in the UK must have some form of life saving qualification which most commonly takes the form of the National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NBLQ). This is designed to be generic and is accepted as the standard qualification for lifeguards on most UK beaches. However, this award is only a foundation module and is designed to be accompanied with in-service training to acclimatise the lifeguard to the specific beach environment they will be working in.

In busy seasons or in major incidents, this extra training could easily be neglected which could result in untrained lifeguards that are both a danger to themselves and the people they are trying to save. This could potentially lead to serious personal injuries to the lifeguard in a work accident. If the employer was found to negligent in providing the necessary training or equipment, they could be pursued in a personal injury compensation claim.

If you are a life guard and have suffered a work accident that was not your fault, you could be entitled to personal injury compensation claim. Although being a beach lifeguard does involve an element of risk, it is your employer's duty to ensure that you remain protected, as far as is practicably possible, from any work accident.
