Seafarers killed and injured in accidents at work aboard ships

Accidents at work are occurring regularly among mariners - many crew members are being killed when they enter enclosed spaces on ships.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has raised concerns about the problem. Stark statistics show there have been 124 fatalities and 123 injuries in 129 enclosed space accidents since 1994.

Accidents connected to enclosed spaces are among the most common causes of seafarer deaths while at work. Recent examples cited were two accidents that led to four deaths on Viking Islay and Saga Rose

Trade unions have called for all enclosed spaces to be designated as dangerous. This is because accidents of this nature are occurring regularly on ships despite this area of personal safety receiving a great deal of attention.

It is a tragedy that many mariners are dying despite the implementation of measures to prevent these fatalities.

Last year (2008) the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) published a safety bulletin about deaths in confined or enclosed spaces because they detected the upward trend in such accidents occurring.

The bulletin states, "It is essential that the IMO recognises the unacceptably large fatality rate in this area and takes the lead in identifying initiatives to improve this very poor safety record."

Calling for increased awareness of the rising death toll, the MAIB warned that people entering enclosed spaces who held their breath might find it was the last life-giving breath they ever took.
