The Northern Irish suffer accident while working

In 2010 a report was released showing Northern Ireland to have the highest proportion of fatal accidents while working compared with anywhere else in the UK. While the figures showed a decrease in the number of fatal work accidents, the number of deaths was still worryingly high.

Between 2008/2009, 1.24 people per 100,000 employees in Northern Ireland were injured compared with 0.5 in Great Britain. The Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) claimed that the results reflect the greater number of workers in dangerous roles such as factory and construction jobs compared with the UK.

However, the Northern Ireland Audit Office (NIAO) encouraged the HSENI to investigate the high fatality rate due to work place injuries so as to discover ways to reduce this number.

While there was a 60% decrease in the number of fatal work accidents in 2009 compared with 2008, the NIAO admitted that the figure was still higher than acceptable.

A spokesperson from the audit office gave this comment at the time of the publication, "In light of the persistent rate differential between Northern Ireland and Great Britain we take the view that this [the number of work related fatalities] remains a significant issue."

However, a managing director from an Irish construction company stressed how the figures should be taken in context as the construction industry is proportionally more important to Northern Ireland than to the UK and so a higher fatal work accident rate is to be expected.

To tackle the dangers surrounding the construction industry in Ireland, a Construction Skills Register scheme was set up in 2010 to give 100,000 workers a day's basic health and safety training. Plus, 600 companies were awarded certificates in health and safety management systems.

It is hoped that the Construction Skills Register will help decrease the rate of fatal work accidents in the construction industry and consequently help reduce Northern Ireland's poor work accident figures.
