Accidents on holiday and drink-skiing

Just as with all holiday activities, any person who drinks while skiing greatly increases his or her chances of suffering an accident on holiday.

Despite the obvious and highly-publicised risks, new research reveals that an alarming number of people admit to drinking before they have even hit the piste.

Price comparison website confused.com, which commissioned the research, says that as many as 35% of male skiers admit to regularly combining their loves of alcohol and skiing.

Furthermore, it is not only juvenile skiers who confess to taking the risk. Nearly one-quarter of skiers between the ages of 31 and 35 admit to drinking two glasses of wine before hitting the slopes.

The head of travel insurance at confused.com warns that these skiers may not only be risking their own and other peoples' personal safety, they may also be risking their entitlement to no win, no fee compensation in the event of a slope-related accident on holiday.

"The amount of people in our research who admit to drinking on the slopes is cause for concern," he said.

Adding, "All travel insurance contracts include an exclusion regarding claims made as a result of alcohol consumption.

"Skiers must be made aware of the risk they take if drinking when on holiday. Insurance providers are fully within their rights to decline claims involving alcohol, as it is reasonable to assume adequate care was not taken."

The prevalence of drink-skiers has not gone unnoticed; 25% of skiers say they have been affected by the antics of drunken skiers and 10% say they have become aware of the aggressive on-piste behaviour of drunk skiers.

A spokesperson from the British Ski Club commented, "Although this issue has been around for a number of years, in Europe the social side of skiing is a big part of what people do.

"People should consider how they might be affected if they do have a drink and should know their own limits when drinking.

"It is important that people can take responsibility for themselves and also make sure they are able to practice speed control."
