Suffering an accident on holiday in Greece

Traffic accidents are one of the highest causes of accidents on holiday suffered by Brits abroad. Driving unfamiliar cars, tiredness, and driving on the other side of the road all make driving abroad particularly treacherous.

Greece is one of Britain's favourite holiday getaway destinations thanks to the cheap flights, hot climate and fantastic beaches it offers. It is especially popular with the under 30s thanks to the great nightlife associated with resort destinations such as Malia and Faliraki.

The hedonistic atmosphere surrounding such popular resorts makes the temptation to drink while under the influence or drink or drugs greater. Many young drivers who would not consider drinking and driving in the UK are therefore tempted into doing it abroad which can greatly increase their chances of becoming involved in a car accident.

At Easter in 2010, a total of 38 traffic accidents were recorded in Greece from the start of the weekend before Easter Week until the night of the following Monday. The majority of the fatal accidents happened on rural roads or those in residential areas rather than on the motorways.

The 2010 accident figures show a 17.1% decrease in fatal accidents since 2009, but an increase in the number of serious accidents by 11.9% and an increase in minor accidents by 9.4%. According to Portuguese traffic police, the majority of fatal road accidents were caused by driver's negligence, excessive speed, violating the right of way and driving in the opposite lane.
