Safety training to avoid a snowmobile accident on holiday

The case of a woman who was left paralysed after a snowmobile accident on holiday in 2007 highlights the importance of basic safety training when using an unfamiliar motorised vehicle in dangerous conditions.

The woman's personal injury solicitors told judges at her High Court hearing in 2009, where she was claiming over £300,000 in compensation from her tour operator, that she was given "very brief and wholly inadequate instructions" by the tour operator and vehicle supplier.

''Our case is that she was sent off on a trip up the mountainside in Italy on a powerful Polaris ski-doo with virtually nothing by way of safety instruction and certainly nothing about what to do in case of emergency," her counsel said.

The case was concerned with liability only as both the vehicle supplier and the tour operator denied negligence and liability for the woman's personal injuries.

Snowmobile safety to avoid an accident on holiday
The Safe Riders! Snowmobile Safety Awareness Programme is a website dedicated to snowmobile and ski-doo safety. The site contains all sorts of information for anyone who is planning to ride such a vehicle and includes sections on:

  • Before you ride

  • Safety

  • Laws (mainly pertaining to USA)

  • Parts

  • Maintenance

  • Emergencies

  • Dangers to avoid

The main contributing factors in snowmobile accidents are alcohol, speed, riding too close, over riding headlights (where the driver travels too fast to be able to react accordingly and safely to what he can see in his headlights), ice, avalanches, other vehicles and general carelessness.

Although the riding of snowmobiles is a fun and exhilarating holiday excursion, travellers should be fully aware of the inherent dangers in their use and full safety briefings and equipment should be provided.
